Septic backing up? Is it the line, the tank, or the drainfield?

Septic tank lid opened up in a green yard

When septic backs up, the problem is in one of three places: the line to the tank, the tank, or the drainfield. I clear the line. A full tank needs a pumper. A failing drainfield needs a septic contractor.

Need it cleared? That's what my septic line cleaning in Lincoln County is for.

Probably the line

  • The tank was pumped not long ago
  • Drains back up, but the yard over the drainfield looks normal
  • You've had roots or grease trouble before

Probably the tank

It's been years since it was pumped. The EPA says most household tanks need pumping every 3 to 5 years. The Montana DEQ keeps a list of licensed pumpers.

Probably the drainfield

Soggy ground or a sewage smell over the drainfield, even after pumping. That's a job for a septic contractor, and Lincoln County Environmental Health handles septic permits.

Not sure? Start with the line

Clearing the line is often the fastest fix, and my camera shows what's going on. If it's the tank or field, I'll tell you.

Common questions

Do you pump septic tanks?

No. I clear the lines. I'll point you to a licensed pumper if that's what you need.

Do septic additives help?

Most experts say you don't need them. Regular pumping does the job.
