Frozen drain or sewer line in Libby: what to do
If every drain in the house is slow after a cold snap, your sewer or septic line may be frozen. Stop running water so it doesn't back up into the house. Then call me.
Backing up right now? I answer 24/7 in Libby, Troy and about 60 miles around.

Signs your line is frozen
- It happened right after a hard cold snap
- Every drain in the house is slow, not just one
- Toilets gurgle or won't go down
- The line runs shallow, or under a driveway where snow got packed down
What to do
- Stop using water so nothing backs up into the house
- Keep cars and plows off the area over the line
- Call me with what you're seeing. I'll tell you if it sounds frozen or clogged
What not to do
Don't pour antifreeze or salt down the drain. If you're on septic, that stuff ends up in your tank. Don't put a torch to plastic pipe either.
Keep it from freezing next winter
Snow is good insulation, so don't plow or pack it down over your line or septic area. Use water every day, even a little. A house that sits empty is the one that freezes. The University of Minnesota septic program has a good cold-weather guide.
What a frozen line call looks like
It's usually the morning after a few nights well below zero. The toilet won't go down, the shower drain is backing up, and nothing helps. Most times the line runs shallow under a driveway or a path where the snow got packed down hard.
I find where the line is frozen, then I thaw it out from the inside. No digging. Once it's flowing, I run the camera through so you know it's clear and nothing cracked. Then I'll tell you what to do so it doesn't happen again next winter.
