Cabin and hunting camp drains: getting through a Montana winter

Drain pipe sticking out of deep snow

A cabin that sits empty all winter is the one most likely to freeze up. A few steps in the fall and a slow start in the spring save you a messy surprise.

Backing up right now? I answer 24/7 in Libby, Troy and about 60 miles around.

Need it cleared? That's what my sewer and septic line cleaning around Libby and Troy is for.

Fall shutdown

  • Shut off the water and drain the lines
  • Flush toilets to empty the tanks
  • Ask before putting antifreeze in drains if you're on septic
  • Leave the snow alone over the septic area. It insulates

Spring start-up

  • Turn water on slowly and look for leaks
  • Run each drain and watch for slow ones
  • Gurgling or backups? Stop and call me before it gets worse
